How It Works: Sinek’s metaphor: if someone at a party advises you to buy Rice Krispies, Oreos, celery, and milk, you have to evaluate each piece of advice individually with no clear filter. But if you are a committed health food advocate, the filter is automatic — only the celery and milk pass, and no evaluation is required for the rest. Clarity of WHY functions as an organisational filter in the same way: it makes every significant decision faster and more consistent because the standard against which choices are evaluated is already established. How It Works: In most successful early-stage companies, the WHY person (the visionary founder) and the HOW person (the operator who knows how to execute the vision) work in close alignment. As companies grow, the WHY person often separates from day-to-day operations, and the HOW people — the managers, the process specialists, the efficiency optimisers — begin to dominate. When HOW overrides WHY — when efficiency replaces purpose as the primary organisational value — companies begin to lose their capacity to inspire. Their communications become product-first. Their culture becomes performance-first. Their brand becomes a logo rather than a belief.
